Chain of Thanks
How a local initiative united Ukrainians across Britain's south coast
On 27th September, a special chain stretched along the British coastline – a chain of gratitude spanning over 180 miles.
What began a month ago as Svitlana Horodylova's initiative in Bexhill, East Sussex, grew into a large-scale action uniting Ukrainians from Whitstable to Bournemouth.
A simple yet heartfelt idea – expressing gratitude through a joint beach clean-up – first found support within the local community, then neighbouring towns picked up the baton. A wave of appreciation rolled across the entire south coast.
At 11am, Ukrainians with children, friends and neighbours came out to the beaches of their towns. With gloves, rubbish bags and sincere gratitude in our hearts, we began doing what felt natural – caring for the land that welcomed us.
Particularly touching were our encounters with local residents. British people approached us, thanking us for the clean-up, and we replied: "No, it's we who thank you" – and explained why we were there. When many of us first set foot on British soil, we had only a suitcase with us, or sometimes nothing at all. Yet British people welcomed us with open hearts, providing shelter, furniture, clothes, warmth and support.
The organisation of the action became an example of genuine mutual aid. Team leaders from different towns shared experience, materials and contacts – creating a living network of support. Some Ukrainians from inland towns without coastlines specially travelled to the sea to join groups from other cities. It was wonderful.
The action proceeded in compliance with all safety regulations, and in several towns picnics were organised after the clean-up – a new link of support and morale-boosting for the Ukrainian community locally.
We showed children by our own example how important it is to care for nature, explaining how even small pieces of plastic or threads can harm marine life. Every item collected is a contribution to ocean cleanliness and care for the future.
Participants are now actively sharing photographs and impressions under the hashtag #chainofthanks. Team leaders dream of making this action regular and uniting even more towns across Britain's entire coastline.
Today, we showed that Ukrainians are a grateful nation. We don't just take – we give back. We don't merely benefit from hospitality – we care for the place that has become our home. And this chain of gratitude that stretched along the shore today is only the beginning.
Thank you to everyone who joined this wonderful initiative. And thank you to Britain for giving us the opportunity not only to find refuge, but to feel part of a great family.
