4 Years of Resilience

4 years of resiliance and resistance

On February 24th in 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Since then, we have seen children stolen, towns and villages devastated, dams, factories and power stations destroyed, ‘human safaris’ in Kherson.

Everywhere, deliberately targeting passenger trains, schools, hospitals, libraries & museums anywhere – anything that is central to Ukrainian life, faith and culture. Non-orthodox churches closed in the occupied areas.

Since then, the Ukrainians have had to endure growing daily bombardment by drone and missile, just as our parents and grand parents did during the blitz [first by bomber, then by V1 drone & V2 missile] in London, Coventry and many other cities. They have learned to carry on and endure – despite daily, nightly alarms warning of approaching terror. Despite broken sleep, little power, fear & constant killings, they carry on, educating their children, cleaning up after attacks, living as normally as possible. They drink tea, bake bread, make music, dance, sing, care for their pets, tend their gardens, pray freely, worship freely, marry, support their soldiers, look after their sick and dying.

Imagine what our lives would be like had the Nazis occupied Britain, or just taken Kent & Sussex. Concentration camps in Brighton; horrors on the Downs. We would have resisted that with the last drop of our blood. Why should the Ukrainians not have the same freedoms we do? Why should evil prosper?

There are several events happening to mark the 4 years since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, including our local choir's performance in Lewes on 21st February.

Please see our Whats On page for details of all events.
